Project Type: Architecture
Location: Cincinnati, OH
Size: 76,500-sf new construction / 6,050-sf existing renovation
CR's latest design replaces the existing Maple Dale Elementary, where we have also done previous renovation work. The previous school was designed around a California concept plan where students must travel outside to other core academic spaces. However, there are some inherent problems with regards to having to travel outside in inclement weather: energy efficiency issues with exterior doors continually being opened, and security issues that the district needed solved with the new building. The new design incorporates transparent conditioned hallways to connect the academic spaces, creating communities and separate identities for each grade level. Maple Dale has a very active music and arts program and the new cafeteria reflects the school's emphasis on arts, as it will be utilized as the central hub of the school. Named "Imagination Theater," this space will be used for special presentations and events. Additionally, CR is designed the entire school around green initiatives, which include, but are not limited to, a high efficiency geothermal well field and chilled beam mechanical system, enhanced acoustics and daylighting controls, and creative landscape solutions that provide opportunities for exterior learning spaces.
